It's key for A/W 2014 apparently. I've not been able to scroll through Twitter or Instagram without seeing a picture of someone proudly flaunting their newly bought "piece." Scarves, coats, hats, gloves, collars- they keep us warm for a day when it's cold. We need not think about where it comes from. I wonder so much that if fur came with advertisements as to how its actually made into clothes, would anyone buy it?
PETA investigators bravely spoke out in an article about the fur trade in China, and it was made clear how badly the animals had it. "Oh its rabbit fur, darling. Fabulous." These kinds of people don't have a clue about the real world, it's embarrassing, and it's ignorance on a whole new level. Or a certain type who've got their first job and are striving to be "fabulous." You're not. You're wearing a dead thing. I've had the argument of "these people who are producing the fur to the market need the money, they live in poverty." blah blah blah. It's bullshit, you have to be a certain type of evil to harm the vulnerable and defenseless. You don't need the money as much as this beautiful living creature needs their life. No matter how much I "needed" money, I wouldn't want blood money. What choice do the animals have? Who are we to take a life just to keep us warm. (Only for a few months at that, as it'll go out of fashion by the next season.)

You wouldn't kill and wear your dog as a coat. Whats the difference? You wouldn't go and catch an animal and skin it yourself and then wear it, because surely that's wrong and it'd probably leave you feeling distraught. But you're willing to let someone else do it for you. That's ignorance on a whole new level. Do these people know that you can buy a faux fur coat for less than half the price.

As a vegetarian and animal lover, to me, it's one of the worst things that's going on right now without much media coverage. I still stick to my statement that it'll end one day soon. People are waking up and opening their eyes, we need to look after our animals rather than wearing them, eating them, using them for entertainment... We are growing and we are still evolving and we're not cavemen anymore. We don't need to kill an animal for a scarf. We don't need to keep them locked in cages against their will when they belong in the wild, and we certainly don't need to eat them.

Please watch this video on the fur trade and see if you can get through it without crying. I can't.

The mid 1990's bought us "Heroin Chic." During 1993, Calvin Klein's advertising campaign featuring Kate Moss seemed to glorify the emaciated drug-addicted look as the new Big Thing. Highlighted rib-cages and collar bones became 'in' and arses, hips and tits were 'out.' During this time, the price of heroin had decreased and his purity had increased quite dramatically. Models are high-earners and i say with no doubt in my mind that a lot of their income would be spent on drugs. The more heroin they used the skinnier they became, the more money they then earned- it was a cycle. Thanks to Vogue in 1999, it all came crashing down. Brazilian Supermodel Giselle Bundchen was used as the face for the Return of the Sexy Model, thus the beginning of a new era for the fashion and modelling industry.
The media has played a HUGE part in our lives since we were little girls, from buying your first magazine to literally walking down the street and catching glimpse of a poster or billboard. You cannot escape it. 2014 is the year of curves. Which is great. For curvy people. "Curvy" in the fashion, modelling and the world of media, does not mean curvy. It means slim, with a big arse, big tits, small waist, etc. You've heard the songs, curves in all the right places. For most women, me included, when you put on weight it doesn't miraculously appear in your bum and boobs. It goes to your tummy, your arms, your legs. That's normal. Recently i've noticed so much shit the media is throwing us, the music industry, fashion industry, films...
"All about that bass" is a song by Meghan Trainor, supposedly something in which girls can listen to and feel empowered. It may be doing that fora small fraction of women, but what about the rest? Naturally skinny girls are being absolutely slated in every song (i say song lightly, they are not songs. they are bullshit.) on the radio today. "Mama told me don't worry about your size, boys like a little more booty to hold at night" or "I'm bringing booty back, go ahead and tell them skinny bitches that." Sorry skinny bitches. She's preaching about girls being taunted for being on the curvy side, when she's doing the exact same fucking thing to people who are different. Is this really your best attempt of empowering women or do you see the fucked up market and want to get rich? Nicki Minaj Anadonda delivers the exact same message. "My anaconda don't want none unless you got buns hun." Firstly, I am fully depressed that this is a legitimate music lyric that our generation currently has on offer. Secondly, I don't have a (surgically enhanced) mega-huge arse like Nicki, therefore no men will ever ever want me? No woman should ever ever ever have to feel like they need to change in order for a man to find them attractive. We don't go to the gym and eat healthily and put on makeup to please men. We do it because it feels nice to us. So fucking what if your 'anaconda' doesn't want any? I cannot comprehend this lyric.
Women today are much much more obsessed with how they look, we are constantly being told that we're not good enough. In another year or so something else will be 'in.' And we'll have something else to strive for, all because we are being fed this bull shit that we need men to find us attractive. I do not want to have a daughter later on in life for her to be fed the same complete rubbish we are being fed. I can only hope that this worrying trend ends soon. It probably won't, being realistic, which is why we need to stop believing everything we read and see. We are all nice and beautiful and clever and funny regardless of how small our boobs are or how long our legs are. The people who are gurning these songs out daily probably have no more than one brain cell. And it's money shaped. It's heroin chic all over again. Please please please don't get sucked in to it anymore!

Arvida Bystrom is an artist that I have recently became obsessed with. Born in Stockholm, she is currently living in London presumably working on her art work. She has became almost an internet sensation for our younger generation, broadcasting on blogging website "Tumblr." On her personal website she describes herself as an artist who mainly uses "photography, occasionally making music and modelling." Dazed magazine describes her as a person who has the ability to sugar coat everything that she works with. I completely agree with this statement, and I believe that she is doing it in a fun yet ironic way to almost make fun of or mock our younger techno-obsessed generation. Her girly and pastel coloured mark on the internet is becoming hard to miss and she is now considered to be a major trendsetter for the current internet art movement. Teenage aesthetics play a huge part in her work and her influences can come from anything from jelly shoes to smart phones- and she transforms these every day almost mundane objects and ways of normal life into an art form. She exploits girly pretty things and rips them to shreds, destroying them and making them look anything but.

Her most controversial piece of work was a photograph called "There will be blood" which shows a young woman menstruating. Something that is seen to be so personal and almost a taboo topic to some more reserved people has been blown up and shown in almost every art and cultural magazine around. A similarity to how the younger generation are sharing almost everything online comes to mind, and the way in which privacy is slowly disappearing. Talking about this specific piece of work during an interview with a blogger, Arvida states: " I didn't know it was blown up. I think it will be around a lot until people actually accept that loads of people around the world are fucking menstruating."

She touches on the subject of the obsession with iphones, macs, basically modern day technology at it's best form and portrays this in her work. A photograph called "iCry" demonstrates the depression that can often happen with the over use of technology. She states that this was all about capitalism and Mac as a company, hinting that they are on the way to owning everything- being worshiped as god like by some people. If you are interested in the damage or simply the influence that technology is having on our generation, you should definitely take a look at Arvida's art work!

I recently visited the David Hockney exhibition at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool. It's one of my favourite gallery's (excluding Tate Liverpool) that i've ever visited, and not just because it's in my home town! David Hockney is one of my favourite artists so I was unbelievably eager to visit his Early Reflections exhibition as soon as I arrived home from the Venice trip with University. I had taken my boyfriend and as I know he's really interested in poetry, I wanted to introduce him to the work of David Hockney, as a lot of his work is accompanied by poets work that he used to spend time with. At the gallery I couldn't resist the chance to dress up as David Hockney and have my photograph taken!

My favourite work was "Peter getting out of Nicks pool" Which shows a naked Peter Schlesinger emerging from the pool of Nick Wilder, a Los Angeles gallery owner. When this was painted, Peter wasn't actually getting out of the pool, the original pose was taken from a snapshot of him leaning against an MG sports car.

I read a lot of Dazed Magazine and I have recently been reading about Lily Bonesso and her new collective. The curator Lily Bonesso of "STITCH" has just presented the weird and wonderful images from her new collective, which have been shown at the "Cock'n'Bull" Gallery. The collection of artists which were involved all combined photography with both installation and illustration to create this unconventional show. I genuinely love concepts like this, and enjoy everything weird about the art world. Things like this would stop me dead in my tracks at an art gallery, and I enjoy thinking about the hundreds of possible meanings for art works like this... If you love all things fun playful and imaginary then you should definitely look more into these artists. My favouite one is "Silva + Cemin."

One of my many passions is Art. As an art history student, I am grateful that I am still able to express my love for contemporary art and photography. My most loved work being that of feminist artists Tracey Emin and Sarah Lucas. I'm really interested in photography, especially portraits and I'm drawn to both photographs and paintings which depict people rather than objects and scenery. I feel that whilst viewing works portraying people, you become more intrigued and a lot more questions are raised for my personally. You wonder who they are, where they came from, what their life has been like up until this photograph, and most importantly what is the story behind the photograph? Why are they being photographed? What makes them so special? Recently I have been really intrigued by an artist/photographer called Eleanor Hardwick. As a huge lover of fashion as well as art, I came across her work after she photographed clothes for one of my favourite designers, Meadham Kirchoff.

She has since produced a series of photographs called "Girls/Ghosts" which was featured in Doomed Gallery in London as part of an exhibition called "Twenty Thirteen." It celebrates the work of various emerging female photographers around the world, focusing on vines, personal diaries, scrapbooks and more. I personally find her work haunting and dark, which is something i love in photography; mystery.

I have currently been researching a lot of portrait photographers. I want to try my hand at portrait photography by the end of it so i'm digging for inspiration.

Nan Goldin's images are interesting- she documented the post-punk music scene in the 70s, as well as the post-Stonewall gay culture. I've looked through a lot of her work and picked my favourite photographs. They all show people behaving extremely naturally in situations that some people would not find natural at all. Sometimes viewed as uncomfortable, yet beautiful. Nan Goldin is one of my favourite portrait photographers to date, and I am always looking for more.

Patrick Mohr, the German designer recently put on a show to remember at Berlin Fashion week when his models appeared on the runway with their mouths literally glued shut, and their eyebrows bleached out. I think either his intention was to have the audience focus simply on his creations walking down the catwalk (by this, I mean his clothes,) by trying to erase any kind of expression from the models faces, or he wanted to cause a reaction. If he was aiming for the first explanation I gave, I don't think he succeeded as I couldn't even focus on the clothes. Although covering the faces I think the clothes were really simple and beautiful, with amazing structure. I admire how unique his show appeared though, and to be fair it was a much toned down version of last year's show were the models were mostly topless, bald and with masses of facial hair...

Lilly Heine is this years most talented designer who has only recently graduated from Central St Martins. Her graduate collection has won her international recognition and respect from other designers and stores including Topshop. They are not hard to spot with the use of the unusal shapes, muted panelling and layering, and obviously liking the uniqueness of the collection, Topshop have decided to stock a variety of Lillys one off designs in December 2010. Lilly is not the only young designer to have been spotted for her amazing talent as fellow graduates Matthew Harding and Simone Rocha are also lucky enough to have one off designs taken from their MA collections and placed into our most loved high street stores.

Her unique designs resulted from inspiration which came from picasso's sketches of curvaceous women, and an interpretation of the exploration of the body and silhouette. She works with alot of muted colours and fleshy tones which are used in her designs such as the grey shift dress with demi-sleeves as well as the fitted T shirt with square leaves. I am looking forward to spotting this collection in the stores this December and judging by the clothes it wont be hard.

Designer Nikolaj Nielsen is the man responsible for this Danish brand of denim dreams, his vision was to launch a distinctive clothing line which would stand out in the fashion world, whilst also being wearable and pretty casual. You've probably seen the clothes stocked in Urban Outfitters but it's time to actually give Nikolaj the recognition he deserves. The latest collection will please lovers of minimilist fashion with the appearence of throw on and go dresses, oversized shirts, blazers and casual shorts, and i've heard more than good praises about the quality of them. His inspiration comes from various objects and architect and designer Thorvald Bindesbøll. A pair of yellow platform shoes with knotted details from the collection were invisioned by Nickolaj taking creamy buttercup colours from Thorvald's ceramics and using them as inspiration for his gorgeous shoe creation.

He's overly hyped in fashion blogs for his practical yet playful collections that everyone seem's to fall in love with, and his popularity seems to just keep on growing so it's probably time to do a bit of research if you haven't already.

Terry Richardson is one of my favourite celebrity photographers. I follow his every move, on Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, you name it. The medias perspective of him is not one to take notice of, he's infamous almost and considered a little bit strange. I don't necessarily think of his photographs as amazing art works, but as part of my generation as it stands, I am susceptible to anything celebrity related. Although I'm definitely not proud of it! I'm simply intrigued by him and how simple yet powerful his works are. His images are always majorly provocative depending on which way you look at them, yet beautiful and they manage to capture the individuals personality with a simple photograph. He's worked for French Vogue, British Vogue, i-D, GQ, Harper's Bazaar and Purple, photographing famous celebrities like Daniel Day Lewis, Leonardo DiCaprio, Vincent Gallo, Tom Ford, Jay Z, Kanye West, Johnny Knoxville, Karl Lagerfeld, Pharell Williams and Lindsay Lohan. Impressive.

Los Angeles born Yael Aflalo is the eco-minded designer of the clothing line 'Love by Yaya' and 'The Reformation Boutique.' The Reformation is a combination of taking items of vintage clothing and re-creating something completley new and original looking whilst still keeping their unique appearence. There are also 'new' items of clothing which are made simply from old vintage materials.

The collection consists of mostly black and different interesting patterns (which is what caught my eye most about the clothes), placed on lightweight silks and chiffon, as well as dresses which combines both the distinct one-of-a-kind look with the on-trend and current pieces. Each item gives off the 'you cant buy this just anywhere' look and they definatley are designed for attracting attention. My favourite item is the amazing YaYa Nom De Plume Chiffon Silk Blouse, which you can purchase by visiting the Urban Outfitters website, http://www.urbanoutfitters.co.uk/ and selecting the 'Reformed' collection. This reformed collection is clearly targeting us young adults and complete lovers of quirky and vintage clothing!
